“It takes all the running you can do, to keep in the same place. If you want to get somewhere else, you must run at least twice as fast as that!” Lewis Carroll said it back in the nineteenth century, but it has never been as true as today. Technology is developing at a breakneck pace, and you have to constantly evolve your product to keep your target audience satisfied. Well, in the last few months we did a lot of running and introduced a number of kickass features to Geenio we’re sure you’ll love. Here’s a rundown:
We made changes to the Geenio design to give the platform a sleeker look and make it even easier to work with - you can see the little touches everywhere. It goes without saying that we did not stop at merely improving the looks of our product, but improved the functionality as well. Working with text in the course editor is now much smoother - formatting the text takes a fraction of the effort it took before, and we improved text box stretching and positioning as well. To top it off, we've implemented friendly notifications in the editor. Should a user, for example, place an object so that it crosses the boundaries of the screen, a notification will be displayed.
PDF and PPT import
If you ever wanted to import your existing courses and other materials from PowerPoint presentations and PDF files, we’ve got good news for you: now you can! We added a new element called “Import” to the course editor, and it does pretty much what it says on the tin. But that’s not all. If the files being imported contain images and text in standard format and are not blocked, you can continue editing them in Geenio. You can move the elements around and edit text. Note that this feature is only available for Business and Enterprise-level subscriptions.
Breaking news! Iframe objects can now be used in Geenio courses. This opens a whole new vista of possibilities - you can make almost any website or web page a part of your course, keeping all the interactivity. Import videos from any streaming service, add diagrams, graphs, or presentations - and that is just the tip of the iceberg. Can you think of other creative ways to use iframe in your courses? You’ve been asking us for some time to introduce API for integrating with other platforms and solutions, and we listened. The latest Geenio release comes with a comprehensive suite of API methods covering all most common user scenarios. If you are unfamiliar with what API means and why do you need it, read on.
API stands for Application Programming Interface, and is a set of pre-packaged instructions meant to make the programmer’s life easier when they need to integrate one product with another. In such situations, having access to API makes the integration process way easier and more smooth by giving the developer access to a handy and well-documented toolset containing all the necessary functions and methods. And now we’ve got it. Ain’t that swell?
The exact specifications on what kind of data can be retrieved via API and what kind of operations can be carried on depend on the product, and are left to the manufacturer’s discretion. Here at Geenio we settled on the following list of available operations:
Creating and removing groups
Creating and blocking users, as well as assigning courses to them
Assigning courses to groups of users
Retrieve the information about courses assigned to a specific user
Edit users’ information
Add users to/remove users from groups
Retrieve users’ lists
Retrieve group statistics
Retrieve the list of existing courses
Retrieve detailed information about specific courses and its statistics

User-defined Page Templates
You are probably familiar with the page templates functionality we introduced in the last update. This time around we decided to improve upon it and enable the user to create their own page templates that could then be used on other pages and even in other courses. The interface for this feature remains simple and intuitive - three cheers for our UI designers :)
To create a custom page template, create a page first, then place the objects you want to include on it and arrange them as desired. Once you are happy with the way the page looks, click the “Choose template” icon.
Go to the “Saved pages” tab and click “Save current page as template”. You will see the created template’s thumbnail in the list below.
From now on, you can use the new template by clicking the thumbnail in the menu.
A new blog
Together with the new Geenio release we decided to give our blog a fresh coat of paint. Few weeks ago we moved from a cloud blogging platform to dedicated hosting, and all the hot new articles will be posted there. The new blog looks way cooler than the old one, but what’s more important, it has been integrated with the Geenio website and can be easily reached. And after you’ve read the latest articles, you can log in to Geenio on the same page.
What lies ahead
We’ve got another major update in the works, one that will introduce a long-requested feature and pleasantly surprise even the staunchest sceptics. What’s in it?
